Having a baby in the NICU is devastating. We all imagine bringing our babies home with us once we are released from the hospital. We have planned every little thing from what we will pack in their hospital bag to what outfit they will come home in. When your baby is rushed off to the NICU, all of that is ripped from you.
How long will my baby be in the NICU? You can never get an exact answer because the nurses don’t even know. You want to be with your baby 24/7 even while you are trying to recover from the delivery yourself. You are pumping at home and bringing any milk that your body is able to supply. You are going home day after day without your baby to hold. You are seeing all of your friends on social media holding their newborn bundles of joy. You are planning your trips to the NICU around their care times in hopes that you will get to help change, feed or bathe your baby.
What can make the NICU stay a bit easier? Bring some personal belongings to keep in your small cramped area of the unit, such as pictures or a stuffy. Ask questions and stay informed. There are no stupid questions when it comes to your baby. Celebrate special occasions and milestones. Try to go the same time each day, keep a routine and get to know your nurses. If the babies are stable enough and your NICU allows, bring friends and family to support you and your little one. Most importantly, take care of yourself! You are still recovering. Rest when you need to and do not skip meals. Remember that since your baby is in the NICU, there will be ups and downs.
Try to stay positive. Thank the nurses that are caring for your little ones, they may not hear it enough.
